How does solar thermal work?

Solar hot water or solar thermal are the two terms used to describe a solar system that uses the sun's energy to heat water. This hot water is then simply pumped to your cylinder and used in the normal way. In the UK, a typical solar thermal system can supply up to 70% of a household's hot water requirement.

A solar panel mounted on the roof concentrates the sun's energy throughout the day and efficiently uses that energy to heat water which is pumped into your cylinder. In the brighter summer months, enough heat can be generated to supply most of the hot water your family will need.

In the darker winter months, although the system is still able to generate some heat, it really functions as a way of pre-heating the water in your cylinder so that you don't have to use quite as much gas/ oil or electricity to bring that water up to the full temperature you normally operate at.

Air to air heat pumps

If you're looking for a cost effective, low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing way to heat or cool a large space, air to air heat pumps could be the perfect option for you. They can effectively heat or cool up to 120 square metres, making them a perfect option for open plan areas such as commercial premises, classrooms, places of worship, loft and basement conversions and home extensions. The units also use "Cluster Ion Technology" to function as air purifiers and particulate filters that don't dry out the air in the same way that many air conditioning units do. This is ideal for allergy sufferers and contact lens wearers.

It only takes a day or two to install these units. They are also low cost, with a 6Kw unit only costing around 4 pence per hour to run on maximum output.

They are also up to 500% efficient.

Air to water heat pumps

Air to water heat pumps are relatively similar to air to air heat pumps. They also use latent heat in the air to generate heat within your property. However, they also have a builtin hot water cylinder. They can replace an old or low-quality boiler and provide plenty of hot water to any space.

These units run entirely on electricity, making them a great, eco-friendly option or the perfect option for buildings that have no access or restricted access to mains gas.
